52 Weekends was patterned after a Canadian program called the The Starfish Program. The program was started as a pilot project in response to a teacher’s cry for help. She was feeding many of her Kindergarten students who were coming to school on Monday hungry. The hunger was affecting their moods and their ability to focus in class.
Many students across the country rely on school breakfast and lunch programs to fill their tummy’s on school days. When it comes to the weekend, they don’t have the food they need. 52 Weekends was designed to address that gap. 52 Weekends provides bags with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and snacks to hungry students each weekend of the school year and beyond.
Teachers have reported improvements in children’s reading skills, math skills, ability to focus and to do partner work. 52 Weekends has now expanded to 52 weeks to make sure children on San Juan Island don’t have to worry about weekend hunger.
The program started in the elementary school, but we have begun to expand the reach to Head Start, middle and high school kids.
The Rotary Foundation of the San Juan Islands has a passion for reducing food scarcity for our island kids. Many children go without food over the weekend. “52 Weekends” offers a solution to weekend student nutritional needs. 52 weekends is now year round.
We are happy to announce that Rotary will once again provide weekend nutrition options for children through our 52 weekends program. Students in Head Start and Friday Harbor Public Schools are eligible for the program. This program is sponsored by San Juan Island Rotary Club and community donors. We need help in identifying students who would benefit from the opportunity to take home a bag filled with easy-to-prepare foods and snacks, to eat on weekends. Bags will be delivered or picked up on Thursday or Fridays.
Please let us know if you would be interested in having your child participate in the program by filling out and signing the form below. To submit the form, click on the SIGN ME UP button below.
